Here’s some drone photography of Lancashire for you; see if you can spot the areas in enhanced lockdown (no exchange of bodily fluids allowed after 18:45 Mon to Wed, 20:45, Thr to Sun).
A much better map of Lancashire is the one on Page 239 of the Guide.
Unless, of course, you have no truck with modern counties and know that there’s no such thing as “Merseyside“.
Clearly I’d rather have finished the chapter in a micro in a Preston suburb, but Higher Walton remains closed so I had to make do with this view in Bashall Eaves, home to the rotating gastropub entry in the Forest of Bowland.
I was convinced I’d done the Red Pump, either mixing it up with the Running Pump near Preston or blanking from my mind the fact I DIDN’T complete Lancs in GBG19, something I can never rectify.
It’s a good job I headed straight here after moving Matt, as the opening hours on Thursday weren’t generous;
Yes, a mere 3 hour window. Another half hour dawdling in storage facilities and I’d have missed it.
As it was, I didn’t get a good sight of the bar, either, and had that awkward situation of standing in a defined square waiting to be seated.
But these pictures will tell you all you need.
BUT. The landlady was exemplary; efficient, welcoming and pouring a lovely crisp pint of Bowland that might just have been the best of the crop in Lancashire this year. The last pint in a county sometimes is.
This was no evening to be inside.
What can I say ?
Even the cows came to say hello and note my NBSS score. Perhaps they knew the steak restaurant had called last orders.

A lovely and unspoilt area of the country, largely unknown to tourists, unless things have changed in the past 40 years.
Congratulations on “pinking” Lancashire, if I’m allowed to say that, and it’s not a euphemism that I’m not aware of!

A Tardis would be great. I could be BRAPA’s assistant and we could go back and do all the pubs in the 1974 Beer Guide and eat crumbling sandwiches in each one.

The 1974 GBG had symbols for “sandwiches or snacks” and “meals”
For 1975 it was “Sandwiches and other snacks” – both not either – and, yes, “Proper meals”.
In 1976 it was back to either/or “sandwiches or snacks” but still “proper meals”.
From 1977 sandwiches and/or snacks were dropped and it was just – proper or improper – “meals and lunchtimes” and/or “meals in the evening”.
