HOUSEHUNTING IN SHEFFIELD (I)

Mrs RM is loving this house-hunting lark. Personally, a day spent cleaning our house ahead of a viewing or traipsing round someone else’s home is a day I could have been in Devon ticking pubs that don’t want me.

Thursday 28 August (yes, that far behind) produced 4:43 hours of travelling (starting at the Crow !), 4 house viewings, a bacon bagel, 2 flat whites, some Portuguese pastries and a half of Stout.

And this pretty drawing in my travel history (essential for reminding me who I am);

The Crow is a really good value Bed (but not Breakfast) with the sort of views I probably appreciate more than you.

So we had breakfast bagels in Coffee Boo near Hillsborough Park.

Almost craft.

Hillsborough didn’t appeal to our house hunters (too ’70s), so we popped west to Ecclesall Road for their famous street art, pastries at Cafe Marco,

and running water that made me dash for an emergency loo stop near the cemetery gates. Bad move.

Ecclesall Road is a bit pricey, and busy for our discerning buyer, and plagued by bistros.

Two more viewings in Walkley, then a late lunch at Closed Shop, a former GBG regular which seems to be suffering a bit of handpump overload.

We were directed to our table before I could see the pumps and jam jars and I asked for a half of Stancil. “They’re all Stancil !“. One is plenty….

Mrs RM listened patiently to the lady explain all the beer styles and then asked “But which one is strongest ?”.

Friendly staff, landfill indie, a few work-at-home professionals round the corner, giant bay windows, proper seats.

Closed Shop was always more about the food than the beer, I thought, so a surprise to see lovely little Stancil run it.

The beer was decent enough (NBSS 3+ says Mrs RM, who had the pints), but if I could only eat in one pub forever I’d either choose this or Thai at the Wrestlers.

But I suspect, if I lived here, we’d be spending more time drinking just over the road…..

  3. All the Stancill pubs I’ve been in have their beers in good nick, and in the Closed Shop the beers are better than under the previous management – when they had fewer beers on! I hardly ever go in the Hallamshire House, as I don’t like Thornbridge Beers. So if you do move to Sheffield and you want to avoid me, you know where to go!

  4. Walkley is a lovely part of Sheffield. We have friends who live just down the road from these two pubs, so we have been in a few times over the years. The food options in the Closed Shop were always good, but your pictures make it look even better than I remember.

    Can’t remember there being so many beer choices in Closed Shop and agree with the comments that its likely to be too many for a pub of this size. That would have constituted a full on ‘pub’ Beer Festival only a few years ago.

    1. Agree with all that.

      I think that Stancil run the Closed Shop as their flagship. The beer was good enough, but turnover is always going to be an issue in a suburban pub with a lot of lager and wine trade.

    And with that, I must sadly remain a day (or two!) behind. My darling wife returned home late Friday after being away for a week (part of the wedding party for the wedding of one of her – many – sisters). We have been, um, ‘reconnecting’ as it were, so I’ve been a bit busy. 😉
