BASS MIRRORS PHOTOBOMB MY SELFIE IN LANGTON MATRAVERS

Just back from 2 days pubbing on the west coast of Scotland with Pubmeister, who has the cleanest house in Paisley (it says on my crib notes).

Loads of posts to catch up with starting with the one that isn’t quite the Square & Compasses.

Purbeck

But the King’s Arms was still heaving on a sunny Summer Sunday.

Ancient

In many parts of the country this Langton lovely would be the star attraction; here it plays 3rd fiddle to the Square and, of course, Corfe Castle’s Royal British Legion.

But the King’s works for me as pub.

Two rooms show sports; one the City v Liverpool match and the other (with the Liverpool scarves) the F1. Try sticking Sky in the Square & Compass and see how far you get.

Put those legs away

It’s a warren of flagstone floors, bare legs, and large beetles  (not Ringo).

Someone will tell me they’re no beetles.

Those of you who know me will  guess which beer I went for.

Easy choice

Yes, the shy little Ringwood on the end, left in the loving care of Marston’s these days.

It was OK.  Next time have the Oakham and stop being so pretentious. Even a little trip to the garden couldn’t edge it to the magical 3.

So no wonder I look a bit grumpy in this otherwise staggering selfie.

  1. “who has the cleanest house in Paisley (it says on my crib notes).”

You looked in every house in Paisley?

“starting with the one that isn’t quite the Square & Compasses.”

That’s a popular one. It’s got a whole page to itself in Pete Brown’s book “The Pub”.

“A rare place you can’t see Corfe Castle from”

Pfft. There’s lots of places over here where you can’t see it either.

“Try sticking Sky in the Square & Compass and see how far you get.”

They’d probably be upset because that would mean the roof’s been nicked?

    “and large beetles (not Ringo).”

The best large beetle was the infamous fifth beetle on the Abbey Road album cover. 😉

“Someone will tell me they’re no beetles.”

Blimey! Though I won’t be the one to tell you that they’re ‘not’ beetles. 😉

    “Easy choice”

I don’t see the Plum Porter.

    “in this otherwise staggering selfie.”

You don’t seem to be wobbling to me. 😉

    “Excuse the Bass”

I think ‘Mind the Bass’ would have been more apropos.

    Cheers

  2. I have fond memories of the Kings Arms, following a camping holiday in the Purbecks forty years ago. The pub sold Whitbread beers from Romsey, back then.

    1. Goodness me, we may have crossed paths back then!
Have you seen Nuts In May, the Mike Leigh TV comedy film from 76 set on Purbeck campsites?

If not, do. It’s genius, and as cringingly funny as The Office.

      1. I will take a look on YouTube for the Mike Leigh film, Martin.

Btw, the campsite we stayed at was called “Tom’s Field.” Tom was a bit of character, who preferred campers like us, to caravaners. I’m not entirely sure why that was, but he didn’t have a good word to say about the latter group, even though he was obviously taking money from them.

That holiday, saw my first, and so far only visit to Worth Matravers and the Square & Compass. I don’t suppose it’s changed much in 40 years!
