SPOONS CASK WOE GOES ON AND ON

Back to my favourite subjects. Cask quality, Spoons and those CAMRA discounts we’ve been fighting so hard for since 1971.

The Resolution is very much the 3rd Spoons in Middlesbrough, the one that never makes the Beer Guide, the one the ladies singing “I Touch Myself” move onto at 11pm.

As you can see, it’s FUN FUN FUN.

No pretense in the cask line-up.

Those of you with a degree in Maths and an ability to see through pints will deduce I paid £1.29 for my Double Maxim here, making the Discovery a rip off.

Except that this was foamy and uninspiring (NBSS 2.5). The Spoons longpull seen in many places probably ran to 20 ft here.

I reckon my last 10 pints in Spoons have produced 2 of GBG standard. And they get shabbier by the year.

No karaoke, either.

Still, one less voucher to burn in 2 days time.

So for the late night aimless stroll.

Love the ‘Boro as I might, it’s being left behind by Stockton with its banked Bass and Cloudwater and fountains.

Even the famed new bars were a bit quiet.

And you’ll have seen this art on Pubmeister.

I should have popped in one micro, probably the Infant Hercules, but I just didn’t have the heart.

And my Guisborough Chinese was getting cold.

  1. Might I remind you, that the late Russian president Boris Yeltsin was known to enjoy performing with wooden spoons among his erstwhile officials?

  2. Isn’t an NBSS 2.5 pint of Double Maxim pretty much what you’d expect in a non-GBG Spoons? It would wash your lunch down well enough…

    1. I guess so, technically it’s competently kept, and I’d probably have persevered with it over a gourmet burger at lunch.

But it felt quite heavy after the smooth pint in the Stonegate pub. Would have been a good example of how two pubs serving the same beer 10 yards apart can be so different.

Are you referring to that inflatable sheep?

“Except that this was foamy and uninspiring (NBSS 2.5)”

I notice there’s no photo of the lacings.

“Even the famed new bars were a bit quiet.”

Is that a new micro in the photo?

“but I just didn’t have the heart.”

A string of duff beers will get anyone down.

  4. That spiral staircase in the Spoons looks a bit worrying -longer than the one at Euston Tap -as a lady of a certain age, I do not appreciate such objects -please tell me the toilets were not up there !

The toilets might be up there. But if you are “…a lady of a certain age…”, you will probably be of no interest to anyone who might be looking for ladies of other ages. So don’t worry,
