Just back from a dull morning in Ely, with no market on, and just the one Beer Guide pub that I wrote about on Mrs RM’s birthday. I was really struck by the lack of street art though.
One of the great joys of urban walks, apart from the pubs, is the increasing quality of the graffiti. Nowhere is this more noticeable than when using tunnels to cross busy roads.
Simon Everitt often features what he calls “subway” art on his excellent blog (*), but I always preferred the John Foxx riposte to The Cure’s Subway Song, so Underpass it is.
No messing, just a Top 10 from the last year:-
No.10 – Dover seafront – the local history one
No.9 Brightlingsea – the cat one
No.8 Weston super Mare – the fake Banksy one
No.7 Havana – the foreign one
No. 6 Exeter – the rubbish one
No.5 Portsmouth – the smiley one
No.4 – Cambridge – the sinister one
No. 3 Shoreditch – the Shoreditch one
No.2 Norwich – the serious one
No. 1 – Newcastle-under-Lyme (near the Arnold Machin). Evocative and beautiful, and on the way to the Hop Inn
Worst underpass – Coventry. As it was in 1997.
